Tax Day: No Post Office Extended Hours

The post office is changing with the times.

It used to be that tax day meant local post offices would have extended hours, with some sites open until midnight for last-minute filers, but that is no longer the case.

Local post offices will not have extended hours this year, according to Cathy Yarosky, Communications Programs Specialist for the Post Office.

"According to the IRS, about 80% of all tax returns will be filed electronically this year….so our (tax return) volume is down considerably. As a result, no extended hours and no ‘midnight’ postmarks," Yarosky said in an email to Patch.

Yarosky said first-class mail, which is what a tax return is considered, is down 25 percent in mail volume over the past 5 years.

For Main Line residents who may be pushing the limit and filing on paper, the clerks at the Haverford Post Office on Lancaster Avenue told me that the Southeastern post office in Tredyffrin is open daily until 9 p.m. (the local post office connected to the distribution center has not closed) But, if you're reading this you're probably not sweating a paper tax return at this point.

What WILL every local TV station in Philadelphia, and in every local TV market across the country, do to fill the time on tonight's late newscast? Ever since the first LiveEyeActionLocal News live news van went on the air in the 70's the "last minute mailers racing to the post office before midnight" has been a staple of the April 15th newscast.
