Bret Binder Calls Education His Top Priority: Fights Truitt/Corbett Education Budget Cuts

Bret supports public education and vows to restore Pennsylvania's education budget which has been cut by more than 800 million in the last two years under Dan Truitt and Tom Corbett.

East Bradford, Pennsylvania – Speaking at meetings, rallies, public forums, and private events, Bret Binder consistently identifies education as his top priority and the number one issue he wants to address in Harrisburg. If elected he will fight to restore the more than $800 million dollars in education funding which has been slashed by Governor Corbett and Dan Truitt during the past two years.

Speaking this week at a neighborhood meeting, Bret said "Education has always been the key to opportunity. We are now depriving children in Pennsylvania of the opportunity to succeed. Ultimately, businesses will leave Pennsylvania if we do not have a qualified workforce. The budget cuts are short sighted and for every dollar cut from education spending it is projected that between $7 and $17 will be spent down the road in social services, higher unemployment, and penitentiary costs."Bret pointed out that local townships have to pick up the tab when Harrisburg slashes funding for essential programs, which causes local school boards to raise local property taxes while cutting programs. Many schools are forced either to cut extracurricular programs or to create “Pay to Play” systems such as the one in the West Chester Area School District where families can be forced to pay as much as $200 so that their children can participate in after-school and extracurricular activities. Pay to Play programs are a back-door tax increase and a heavy burden on working families throughout Pennsylvania. They prevent kids from participating in sports, art programs, and after-school enrichment programs to help them succeed.

Bret would also vote to restore funding cuts to higher education to help keep tuition down so that college students can graduate with less debt. Bret pointed out “[his opponent] Dan Truitt has voted for the education budget cuts. His negative stance on public education is clearly demonstrated by his record." Bret noted that West Chester University has lost 40% of its state funding over the past two years.

Bret is an attorney and is the founder and managing partner of Binder & Canno, LLC. His practice focuses on small businesses, real estate, and commercial litigation. Bret earned his law degree at Villanova University School of Law. He has a B.A. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania where he also minored in mathematics and engineering. Bret was a star athlete in high school and college and continues to play semi-pro baseball.

The 156th District includes West Chester Borough, East Goshen Township, West Goshen Township, and portions of East Bradford Township in central Chester County.
