Is It Time to Ditch the 'Delaware Valley?'

An opinion piece in the Philadelphia Business Journal calls for the Delaware Valley to … well, ditch the Delaware Valley.

Stephen Mullin, president of Econsult Solutions, says that it’s time for the area to ditch its geographically correct name and embrace the area’s biggest city, Philadelphia, as a way to promote “our national and international branding.”

“You don’t hear people around Boston calling themselves the ‘East-of-Cape Cod Bay District’ or New Yorkers calling themselves the ‘Lower Hudson Valley’ or the Chicago metro area calling itself the ‘Lower Lake Michigan Shore Region,’” he writes for the journal.

He pitches “Philadelphia Metropolitan” or “Great Philadelphia” as alternatives.

As a person who wasn’t born and raised in the Philly area, the idea doesn’t seem too unreasonable to me, but I’m interested: Is “Greater Philly” a better fit for the region than “Delaware Valley?” Does an alternative title give the city’s ‘burbs and surrounding communities too much of a tie to Philly? Do you call where you live “the Delaware Valley?”
