Recess: Nostalgic or Necessary?

If a generation ago you asked any first grade student what his favorite subject was in school, he most likely would have responded, "Recess." Today's first grader may respond quite differently. Have children changed so much that the mathematics unit on money is more intriguing than mastering the monkey bars on the school playground? No, they have not, but their school day has undergone some more than cosmetic changes.

A notable trend of limiting or eliminating recess in elementary schools has emerged as a focus on more "academic" pursuits has won out over that nostalgic time of day. However, research has shown that recess plays a crucial role in elementary schools. Recess offers cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits for young learners. And, it's still just plain, good fun!
