Atlanta-based CARE, Habitat for Humanity and Project GRAD Atlanta are among the nonprofits trying to encourage people to pause in their shopping and find a way to help others.
Will donating to charity ever be as popular as shopping during the holiday season? A partnership of nonprofits hopes so. For many people, the holiday shopping marathon began on Thanksgiving day, with some national chains opening their doors just hours after the traditional turkey dinner. Then comes Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, which has morphed into Cyber Week. Now, there's a new campaign asking you to open your wallet _ Giving Tuesday. The Giving Tuesday website says the effort, coming on the heels of days devoted to consumerism, is designed "to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations." …

Thanksgiving isn't the reason for the high price of this turkey. Find out what makes this bird so pricey.
As Thanksgiving draws closer by the day, you may be preparing to buy your bird and wondering what the turkey will cost you. In Chestnut Hill, they have a very special turkey that will cost you $28,000. At the Philadelphia Print Shop, an 1860 chromolithograph of a turkey by John James Audobon titled “Wild Turkey. Male. American Cane" hangs prominently on the wall. Even though the print is a second edition, it is actually more rare than the first edition, according to Jane Toczek, who works in the shop. "The first edition in the same size was made in London. The second was made in New York in 1860, but the printing was never completed because most of the clients for this type of print lived in the South," Tozcek said. "New York couldn't do …

A group of writers will visit the Chester County Book and Music Company Friday night.
Editor's Note: A version of this story appeared early in the week claiming that Lisa Loeb would be at the Chester County Book Store Friday night. There will be a Lisa Loeb there, but not the one you think. This Lisa Loeb is a local cookbook author. I apologize for this error. The Chester County Book and Music Company is hosting an "Authors Say Thank You Night" on Friday, Oct. 26 from 6-9 p.m. that will include visits from a slew of local authors and writers. The night offers an opportunity for readers to meet and chat with their favorite writers as well as get book reccomendations and autographs. The list of area writers includes: Cordelia France Biddle, Jen Bryant, Nero Blanc, Jim Breslin, Jessica Dimuzio, Merry Jones, Susan Beth …

A local artist invites musicians and the public to his home for a party.
For the past four years, Ben Gall – a Dutch art collector and unofficial mover and shaker of the Chester County art scene – has known what he will be doing on Labor Day weekend. So do about 50 or 60 local musicians: they will enjoy the day not just eating barbeque but playing up a storm at Gall’s house outside of West Chester, near Malvern. The annual event, dubbed the “Music & Pool Fest,” is not exactly a public event but neither is it entirely private. Anyone interested in hearing good music, preformed informally, with groups of musicians winging it (or reading music) is invited out to Gall’s house. For those musicians or music lovers who are the perennial night owls, no need to worry that the party will shut down at midnight – the …

The independent bookseller located in the Goshen Shopping Center was a staple for local readers.
Online vendors and e-books have spelled the end for Chester County Book & Music Company—or perhaps the beginning of a new, more modest chapter. According to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the massive independent bookstore, located on Paoli Pike in West Goshen, will close its doors at an uncertain date in the near future. The owner is considering options, such as keeping a smaller version of the store open. The bookstore was founded in 1982 by Kathy and Bob Simoneaux, and it expanded over the years to include hundreds of thousands of titles and a restaurant. But the likes of Amazon and Kindle cut too deeply into its business: But now, Simoneaux faces what is almost inevitable for independent booksellers under pressure from e-readers…

The following was taken from an Uptown! Entertainment Alliance press release.
This Saturday, July 14 at 11 a.m., the Chester County Historical Society will be filled with energy, imagination, creativity and lots of fun as the Uptown! Entertainment Alliance presents the Greater Ocean City Theatre Company (OCTC) in a professional, family-oriented musical production. The first of a three show series, "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" is a bright adaptation of the popular Judith Viorst book. In the story, Alexander is having a bad day. A terrible day. A horrible day. To be quite honest, it's a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. But then, everybody has bad days, sometimes. This brilliant adaptation sets Alexander's rather trying life to music and brings to the stage one of America's …
