West Goshen Township will present William Shakespeare's play "Richard III" on Saturday July 30, starting at 7 p.m. at West Goshen Community Park.

Admission to the show is free, but guest are encouraged to bring a dried good donation like soap, toilet paper, deodorant, shampoo, laundry detergent or diapers for the West Chester Food Cupboard and the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The play itself fits in to the middle tier of the, to borrow from Bill Simmons, "Shakespearen Pyramid of Familiarity."  The top tier would include "Hamlet" and "Romeo and Juliet," while the bottom tier includes plays I have never heard of like "Cymbeline," and I was an English minor in college.

"Richard III" follows the adventures of the dour and hunchbacked Richard as he plots to murder his brother and current King of England, Edward.

It's a familiar Shakesperean tale as Richard struggles with his thirst for power and the questionable moral decisions he must make to achieve that power.

I'll be honest.  I read this play in college, and I don't remember a lot about it.  What I do remember is the charming Welsh professor I had describe Richard as a "pot smoking fan of Radiohead." 

To be fair to Richard though, this same professor described Hamlet as a "whiny drama student with a philosophy minor."
