West Chester Teachers Rally for a New Contract
Members of the West Chester Education Association gathered outside the district's administration office to rally support for a new contract.
The West Chester Education Association held a rally in front of the district’s administration building before Monday night’s school board meeting.
“We didn’t get in this for the money,” said teachers’ association president Deb Fell in front of a crowd of district teachers. “All we want is a fair wage.”
The education association is in negotiations with the school board for a new teachers’ contract.
The teachers have been working without a contract since June 30, and last year, the union agreed to freeze its wages saving the district $2.6 million.
“When we submitted our first proposal, the union and the board were separated by $25 million,” Fell said. “We’ve moved back $19 million since then. The board still refuses to budge. It’s time for the board to negotiate and not dictate.”
The two sides have another negotiation session scheduled for October 10.
At the board meeting, school board president Vince Murphy said that the district’s current proposal would have district teachers earn an additional $2,500 in take home pay.
“For many teachers this proposal yields significantly more dollars than the association’s proposal,” Murphy said. “To reject it out of hand in the newspaper and not at the bargaining table is a complete dereliction of the collective bargaining process.”
“Money is not our motivation,” said teacher Chris Bruno who is also on the negotiation team. “This is a time where we need to stand together. Right now education comes first.

How do you remove a school board member? It's time that Adsett goes, sooner than defeating her in 2013 would be preferable. We put up with Carpenter's tea party antics, holding the waterboarding sign, being a VP of the independence teaparty, we put up with Snooks email to the Knights of Columbus and doing the homily at her church against public schools and for vouchers...however, they didn't throw their school board position in our faces-though we know they are on the board.
Adsett writes letters to the editor using her title, did a robo call in the last election and i received it, plays cutsie to Action News and clearly is speaking for the board. Does the whole damn board agree with her doing this? Shouldn't the president or superintendent sit this woman down and tell her to stop. She flames the fires of discourse in this district and we don't need it. We need compromise for the sake of our kids.
Sorry, saw the news and got ticked off all over again her obvious hatred for teachers which she proudly displays at a time when we need cooperation and good will.

Heidi Adsett does not represent our community values and commitment to having great schools. Whenever any concerned citizen has an opportunity, they should remind Heidi Adsett her vision of WCASD is not ours and that she should resign. Our community should not be afraid to stand up to a bully, and Heidi is nothing more than a bully.

The taxpayers have been paying more and more. We never needed a third high school. When a new one was approved, we had to also pay to "refurbish" the 2 existing hs. Now they look brand new w/ all new fields/facilities. The economy is still very bad. People have not seen raises in years!
And the teachers want m

I'm glad that we have great HS facilities and only wish the board would speed up the plans to do the same for the elementary schools, they are really bad. I would never work in a building without a/c and wouldn't expect anyone else to either, much the less send my child to a building where the air is stale and warm. Back to school night wasn't all that comfortable in these buildings but the staff did they best they could with the fans they provided themselves. As for raises, employers of a similar size in Chester County have averaged 3-4% the last few years, give me a break -- our local economy is sound, just look at the lines at the Apple store and restaurants where there are few tables to be found on a weekend night! And, why would we want to send our children to be educated by a bunch of people that have little to no experience. I love the fact that my kids teacher has an ivy league degree, considerable private sector expereince and still makes less than $100k per year, true value in my mind.

Mr. or Mrs. Star -- Most fast food outlet owners are small business folk who create jobs in thier communiity and employ those who need flexible work hours. Many owners hire teens and young adults looking for thier first jobs where they learn the value of work, reward and customer service. I personally know a few owners of fast food restaurants that have made a nice living for themselves and are part of the 1% today, some of whom have even started flipping burgers and learned a business from the ground up, I don't see the harm. I hope that you find some compassion on your way to church this weekend for those that better themselves with whatever resources they can gain access to. Have a good evening, I will!

We have to understand that Chester County is listed on the top counties to live in throughout the United States. Why? Our school systems. Teachers/Administrators/school board members all strive to keep this county one of the best in the nation. However, WCASD tax payers have one of the lowest taxes in the county due to our industry that also helps to sustain our schools. There was once a time in this country that we honored and respected teachers. What happened to that time? And when did everything think that all teachers are, are money hungry people? We have lost value in education as a society and yet, it is education that maintains us. Education is still one of the lowest paid professions, and one of the most important. Our teachers are not asking for huge salary raises or bonuses. But our board just gave our administrators bonuses last night. If you want to talk about unfair salaries, has anyone looked at our administration salaries compared to teachers?
Education needs to thrive for Chester County and our home values to stay where they are. Let's be fair and listen to both sides with clear minds. Please stop judging teachers.

I was at the meeting last night sitting near some of the students who were there to witness our local government in action - they were disgusted. They wanted to know first - why does the board understand the first amendment - and that clapping is not a disruption. Second, do not public officials get that they are subject to public scrutiny and questioning. I told them that would be good discussion points for their American Government class the next day.
I for one felt I was at a political rally - not a board meeting. The one crack up line for me - we have to give the administrators a bonus to be sure they are at "market rate". Oh, but what about our support personnel who do not even make a living wage, and the teachers who even at the top of the scale do not even make what an assistant principal makes as a starting salary. This group needs to at least get their story straight. They would last about one minute at a board meeting in my company .

Cathy Binder's left-wing extremism in support of her husband seeking the position of State Rep. to collect a taxpayer-funded pension is transparent for all to see. Yes, it is a Constitutional right to protest and hold up signs, block doorways, and generally act like like a mob ...which is how the Union die-hards behaved at Spellman. Thankfully most teachers stayed away from such a mob mentality, just like most voters will stay away from Bret Binder and his love of the teachers' Union.
I was also at the meeting, sitting among the students, who were in the back right corner. Not one of them said anything about clapping and the First Amendment. Ms. Binder, you literally make stuff up to justify your love of mobs, compulsory Unionism, and strikes against children.

You are right edufan. I arrived at the meeting and the teachers and others who supported them, including some with their children were very orderly. What I found interesting was the doors were locked, and always in the past the front entrance to Spellman is opened early to allow the public to get in and get seated. How ironic that they kept not only the teachers, but taxpayers like myself out. I am sure that was to create some kind of scene. The fact they had the police there kind of made me annoyed as well. What did they think the teachers were going to do? Really, these are the people I entrust and do trust with my children every day. I feel utterly secure with them and honestly know in any emergency they are as safe with them as they would be with me. Can't say that about the board. All I see from this board, and not just regarding this meeting is every attempt to stifle speech, assembly, political action and perhaps even the law to progress their ideological and narrow agenda. I am sick of it. All I can say is that perhaps in the last election people did not quite get how bad it could be. The message I think is getting out. As a parent I don't care about your politics and agendas, I care about my kids and their education. I don't care about paying a few dollars more in taxes to ensure that education, and I suspect most reasonable people don't. And believe me I am far from rich, I just know a good think when I have it.

Trash was piled up everywhere. It sounded quite horrific. The one good thing that came out of that situation was Margaret Thatcher. My husband and his family are huge fans of Lady Thatcher, as well as any other person who stands up to the union thuggery. My husband "needs to step in"? You have no idea how funny that is! They are a joke. Look at the books, listen to the financial reports. There is no dire crisis. It is one of their imagination. Nobody is asking for the world here from what I see. The idea because Joe Blow at XYX company is not doing great means that nobody in the school district from the support staff to the teachers can get a contract that even compensates for cost of living is hocus. I know as I work in the corporate community that bonuses, raises, COLA's, movement on pay scales is happening. The taxes here are low. Perhaps they are artificially low, which perhaps is the problem. We have had poor management that has not accounted to bring in adequate revenue to run this district as it needs to be run. The pension is a legal obligation - for which this district did not pay its fair share for ten years. Their fault, not the employees. Kept taxes low - oh well, now we do pay. Our teachers are not overpaid, they are fairly paid. They deserve a decent health care plan. I know they would cost share to a greater extent, but not for an inferior plan, would you. The plan proposed is an inferior plan and will not save the district long term. Check it out people. The facts are out there. Stop reading just one side of the story. Do some work. I live in this community and I am not a teacher and have been able to form a conclusion. Sorry it does not suit the right wing crazies. Facts I am finding don't seem to suit that group. The Sunshine Act requires a period for comment which is what occurs. The First Amendment does not prohibit questions so just ask them! It's also a fact that the First Amendment does not compel anyone to anyone a question. So you could ask but not get answered at WCASD. Now, if this was Pennsbury ..you'd be welcome to come and ask me whatever questions you like and you'd get the answers from me. Not answers that you'd like but you'd get them. You'd also be encouraged to come and be critical. Just like I'd be free to beat your liberal candidates by 20 points in the elections and then represent the majority view of the community. Welcome to freedom. Your view that Mrs. Adsett not be allowed to express her views speaks to your belief that a minority Union viewpoint that loses an election has a greater right to representation in government than a majority taxpayer viewpoint that wins an election. You love the First Amendment for you but not anybody who disagrees. Typical liberal mantra. I also didn't see Vince Murphy 'protecting' Mrs. Adsett in any way (who I doubt needs protecting from raging liberals). What I saw was him making a fool of himself by addressing an item that had nothing to do with the official business of the School Board.
