Mayor Celebrates RAMP Certification

West Chester Mayor Carolyn Comitta honors bars and restaurants that complete the state training.

In a ceremony Wednesday night, West Chester Mayor Carolyn Comitta honored restaurants and bars in the borough that received certification in the state liquor control board’s Responsible Alcohol Management Program.

“We’ve had a team working on this for over a year,” Comitta said.  “They’ve been stopping in bars and restaurants to get establishments to participate.”

The state started the program to ensure that alcohol-serving establishments would serve responsibly.  As part of the training, servers and managers learn how to detect fake IDs, how to spot someone who is visibly intoxicated and how to avoid unnecessary liability.

According to the liquor control board, the training also helps reduce alcohol-related incidents like vehicle crashes and fights.

“When we started this program some of the establishments had never heard of it,” Comitta said.  “They thought is had something to do with handicap ramps.  Now, I’m happy to say that over 120 servers in the borough have been trained.”

Comitta added, “This certification shows that you’re a key to keeping West Chester a safe and healthy place and a safe place for all.  This type of partnership can only make our community stronger.”

Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board chief Joseph Brion also attended the meeting, and council president Holly Brown issued a challenge.

“I think you should make this training a requirement for every establishment in the state that’s within a certain distance from any university,” Brown said.

Brion acknowledge that the suggestion was a good idea, and that he would take it under consideration.
