Seems to me the 6 drug violations might be a little more newsworthy than underage drinking.

Most drug offense are usually marijuana related. Unless someone is dealing, the finding of marijuana on a person is less newsworthy than underage drinking.
Drunk kids = noise, property damage, indecent exposure, littering, mischief, thief, etc. High kids = munches, dragged out conversations, starring, and goofiness.

The police have been doing their jobs for years. It is people just now picking up the newspaper reading about it and finally realizing what is going on around here.

I wish locals would stop acting like they were not young once. This is a college town. You have to realize that and come to an agreement on how to deal with certain issues. If you do not like what goes on around here and you do want to put an effort to improve the situation then move. It is not like the university was built yesterday; it has been around since 1871. May be it is the locals that need lesson.
